[The Challenge]

The Challenge

Empower Healthy Ageing through the use of Robotics, IoT and A.I.

The European Commission has identified active and healthy ageing as a major societal challenge common to all European countries, and an area which presents considerable potential for Europe to lead the world in providing innovative responses to this challenge.

According to the 2015 Ageing Report from the European Commission, in the next 50 years the number of Europeans over 65 will double and over-80 almost triple. While the costs for professional care are on the rise, older adults will be more and more dependent on professional and informal carers. At the same time experts expect a shortage of professionals trained and willing to take on the job.

Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society: “Europe is one of the continents with the oldest population world wide. This offers opportunities but also poses massive societal challenges to sustain our care and pension systems, and to maintain our quality of life. While seizing the opportunities of the Silver Economy, we must not deepen inequalities. Innovation for Active and Healthy Ageing must benefit our citizens – all of them.” – Günther Oettinger

Needless to say, caring for seniors – physically, emotionally and mentally – will be of paramount importance in order to tackle future societal issues and exploit revenues deriving from the so called “silver economy”[1]

Key question to answer:

How can we enable [the chosen persona] to live independently at home for as long as possible and fulfilling their needs, wishes and aspirations?

Solution space
